MERMAID COURT YOGA STUDIOS
London Bridge | London

Utilising the existing nineteenth-century warehouse shell in the heart of London Bridge, the new Yoga studio complex grows from and extends the original structure. The scheme extensively renovates the existing basement, ground and first floor studios and adds a dramatic double height studio incorporating a meditation suite. Finishes and structure are left raw and exposed where the strata of constructional methodology is clearly communicated.

Serving each floor is a black steel staircase with a timber curving soffit; characterising the hub space at ground floor. Adjacent, large expanses of rodeca polycarbonate cladding pulls natural light deep into the plan whilst symmetrical circular windows to the main studio and meditation space alludes to some of the symbology of the practice of yoga and meditation. Associated changing and shower facilities finished in blush pink and forest green respectively are connected to each studio.

The historic facade is fully upgraded with renovated concrete lintels providing inspiration for an oversized and carefully articulated grand new opening to the complex. The top storey perforated and corrugated facade sits flush with the old brickwork and presents a lightweight counterpoint to the load bearing structure below. The facade conceals windows by day, but gives off an exterior glow during evening activity; in combination contributing to the ongoing significant regeneration afforded to the area by our client.
